Collectively, our team provides help and support for a range of emotional and mental health issues, as well as working therapeutically with clients to achieve work-life balance, personal development and wellbeing. Borderline is well known in the area, having provided counselling for thirty years, forming excellent working relationships with local GP surgeries, mental health services, charities, local churches, and other organisations.
We are committed to delivering high quality counselling across the modalities and approaches offered.
As an affiliated organisation of the ACC, Borderline subscribes to its code of conduct in areas of ethics, practice and complaints procedures.
All of our counsellors receive supervision and are registered members of BACP, UKCP, NCPS or ACC. Conveniently located in the centre of Carlisle, we offer flexible counselling that can fit around your work and life.
Why Counselling?
There are times in our lives when we feel unable to cope. Sometimes the causes of these problems seem clear and we know where to turn for assistance. At other times, our problems are difficult to understand and we can find no answer from our own resources or contacts.
Talking to a counsellor or therapist who is impartial and skilled, can help us work through a range of difficulties to find solutions. At Borderline our counselling sessions are led by you, the client. Counselling is focused on the areas you want to bring and it’s taken at your pace.
We accept self-referrals from clients. Other healthcare professionals, such as GPs, social workers, colleges and churches can pass our contact details to anyone in need of counselling.

Counselling provides a confidential, safe and non-judgemental space to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions. Our counsellors will support you in being able to manage the different challenges life throws at us, as well as working towards positive changes you want to make in your life for healing, greater purpose and wellbeing. Our counselling at Borderline offers a personalised approach that’s based on your unique circumstances.
Although our counsellors have trained using different models, as a team we work in pluralistic ways to integrate different modalities that include CBT, person-centred, gestalt, creative, somatic, psychodynamic, as well as other counselling models that are appropriate to individual needs.
Motivated by our faith and the ethics of professional standards set down by regulatory bodies, we are committed to the care and compassion for all clients.
Our vision is to improve the overall health and wellbeing of people in Cumberland and reduce health inequalities.
Our key principles are:
To recognise and where appropriate address the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical needs of the individual
To offer an inclusive service of counselling and training
To provide a user-friendly resource centre
To continually improve our service
