Our approach
At Borderline we understand that you will have many questions and concerns ahead of making a decision to undergo counselling. Counselling provides a confidential, safe and non-judgemental space to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions. Our counsellors will support you in being able to manage the different challenges life throws at us, as well as working towards positive changes you want to make in your life for healing, greater purpose and wellbeing. Our counselling at Borderline offers a personalised approach that’s based on your unique circumstances.
Although our counsellors have trained using different models, as a team we work in pluralistic ways to integrate different modalities that include CBT, person-centred, gestalt, creative, somatic, psychodynamic, as well as other counselling models that are appropriate to individual needs.
Will my counselling be confidential?
The issues discussed with your counsellor will not be shared with anyone else other than the counsellor’s clinical supervisor, who gives the same ethical commitment to confidentiality. The only exception to this would be if your counsellor was concerned about a safeguarding risk. All verbal and written information that you share with us is carefully protected according to GDPR legislation to ensure that no-one else has access to it. At your first appointment exceptions to confidentiality will be explained and will form part of our contract with you.

How much will my therapy cost?
When providing inclusive and accessible counselling with professionally trained therapists, our aim is to offer affordable and low-cost options. Our flexible approach allows us to work with you on an individual basis to agree a contribution that’s within reach and sustainable for your counselling journey. We want to ensure that cost is never a barrier to accessing quality counselling so that you can begin your pathway towards healing.
When can I see a counsellor?
We offer flexible times Monday to Friday. We also have some limited spaces for online or telephone counselling.
Counselling takes place at a time that is mutually convenient to you and your counsellor. Usually, counsellors offer weekly sessions, but this will depend on an individual’s needs and sometimes sessions can take place at fortnightly intervals.
How long will my sessions be?
Sessions are usually between 50-60 minutes long. This might vary depending on an individual’s circumstances. For example, when working with trauma, the sessions might be slightly shorter to begin with so that any difficult content can be processed safely and without clients becoming overwhelmed. You will be able to work with your counsellor to determine what’s going to be the most suitable arrangement for you.
What can I expect from therapy?
At Borderline, we believe that therapy is a collaborative process between you and your counsellor. In collaboration with your counsellor, you will agree therapy goals to work towards that are reviewed at regular intervals, usually every six weeks. This will help to support the process needed to work effectively with what you’ve come to counselling for. In your sessions you will begin to gain insight into what’s been challenging for you, as well as developing different coping strategies to manage those challenges and work towards resolving them.
Unlike some services that need to limit the number of sessions, Borderline can offer a service that’s more flexible and suited to client need. You and your counsellor will work together to establish how long the therapy is needed for and when it will come to a close. At Borderline we also offer a free follow-up session six weeks after therapy has finished as a way for you to ‘check-in’ with your counsellor.

Taking The Next Steps?
Step 1:
Get in touch by phone, email or our online contact form. Once you have made contact, we will return your call as soon as possible, usually within ten days.
Step 2:
An initial conversation will enable us to establish what support you are looking for and whether we can help. We can also answer any queries you may have. At this stage you will either be asked to attend an in-person assessment or signposted to another suitable service.
Step 3:
If invited for an assessment, this will help to determine whether our service is going to be most suited to your needs. If that’s not possible, we will direct you to other services or agencies where appropriate. If we can help, once the assessment has been completed you will be contacted again when a counsellor is available.
Step 4:
A counsellor will contact you to arrange a time for your first therapy session.
If you have any questions about the above steps, please contact us by email or our online form.
